Tobacco & cigars
Cigarettes, cigars, rolling tobacco and smokers' essentials.
Ferrara · Gaibanella
For almost a century the Mascellani family's shop has been the anchor of Gaibanella: tobacco, groceries, services and a story that smells of small-town life.
Our story
Tabaccheria Mascellani was founded in 1928 in Gaibanella, a hamlet of Ferrara, as a salt-and-tobacco shop. The family has run it since 1937 and is now in its third generation, with daughter Emma as owner since 2016. Over the years it has also been a trattoria, café, grocer's and petrol station, a compulsory stop on the Mille Miglia.
"We always say: alone we would be nothing, but together we are everything." Francesco Mascellani
In the 1940s it was also a small stage: a customer who sang tenor would dedicate the arias of Puccini's Tosca to the owner, Tosca. Today, alongside state-monopoly goods, the shop sells groceries and stationery and provides the village's everyday services; it still preserves the 1940 banned-games chart and an original cigar cutter.
What you'll find
State-monopoly goods, groceries, stationery and everyday services: at the Mascellani you'll find what you need, just around the corner.

Cigarettes, cigars, rolling tobacco and smokers' essentials.

Lotto, scratch cards, revenue stamps and car-tax stamps: the village betting counter.

Groceries and everyday essentials for Gaibanella.

Notebooks, pens, newspapers and magazines, for school and home.

Bills, top-ups and payments: the essential services, close to home.

The 1940 banned-games chart and the original cigar cutter, still on display in the shop.
More than a tobacconist
For almost a hundred years the shop has been the place where the village stops, meets and finds what it needs.
For Gaibanella, the Mascellani shop has been the place to stop and say hello for generations.
Three generations of the Mascellani family behind the counter, without interruption since 1937.
Once a petrol station and a stop on Italy's most famous race; today a living memory of the village.
Recognition
In May 2022 the City of Ferrara entered Tabaccheria Mascellani in its register of Historic Shops: the first shop from a hamlet to receive the recognition, for its almost one hundred years of uninterrupted activity.
A recognition that rewards the continuity of a family and its bond with Gaibanella — the same shop, the same counter, for three generations.
