Ferrara · Gaibanella

Salt & tobacco in Gaibanella,
since 1928.

For almost a century the Mascellani family's shop has been the anchor of Gaibanella: tobacco, groceries, services and a story that smells of small-town life.

Historic Shop of Ferrara — 2022

Our story

Since 1928, the shop of Gaibanella.

Tabaccheria Mascellani was founded in 1928 in Gaibanella, a hamlet of Ferrara, as a salt-and-tobacco shop. The family has run it since 1937 and is now in its third generation, with daughter Emma as owner since 2016. Over the years it has also been a trattoria, café, grocer's and petrol station, a compulsory stop on the Mille Miglia.

"We always say: alone we would be nothing, but together we are everything." Francesco Mascellani

In the 1940s it was also a small stage: a customer who sang tenor would dedicate the arias of Puccini's Tosca to the owner, Tosca. Today, alongside state-monopoly goods, the shop sells groceries and stationery and provides the village's everyday services; it still preserves the 1940 banned-games chart and an original cigar cutter.

Recognition

A Historic Shop of Ferrara.

In May 2022 the City of Ferrara entered Tabaccheria Mascellani in its register of Historic Shops: the first shop from a hamlet to receive the recognition, for its almost one hundred years of uninterrupted activity.

A recognition that rewards the continuity of a family and its bond with Gaibanella — the same shop, the same counter, for three generations.
